Summer holiday checklists normally consist of have I got enough bikinis, do all my shoes go with my outfit choices, and have I checked and double checked that I have my passport. Here at LVBT we would like to add one key item for consideration; protecting your jewellery. It's easy to forget the effect summer holidays can have on your favourite pieces and the last thing we want is your favourite ring or necklace not making it back home with you.
Here are our three essential tips:
Be aware of the effect the sun can have
This is most likely to be the one side effect that you don't fully consider, you're too busy enjoying seeing the sun for real, for the first time this year! It is both the sunshine and the warmth than can affect the pieces you wear.
The sun can fade the colour of gems and the warmth can cause them to fracture. Be careful not to wear them in direction sunlight too.
Soft metals will start to disfigure if they are in the heat for too long, we advise that you keep soft metals indoors during the warmer hours and save them for nights out.
Always remove jewellery before swimming in the pool or the sea
When jewellery is exposed to chemicals such as chlorine and salt water it speeds up the oxidisation process, which will lead to the piece tarnishing and discolouring. It's particularly damaging to those pieces that are plated.
We advise that you don't jump in the pool or go spontaneously skinny dipping with your favourite earrings or ring on!
Sun lotion can make your jewellery look dull
Whilst it is important to apply plenty of sun lotion at regular intervals, it can leave your jewellery feeling greasy and with a layer of unsightly grime.
Sun lotion won't permanently affect your jewellery, however, we do recommend that you remove your jewellery before applying to keep them looking their best at all times.
We hope that these few tips help to keep all your favourite jewellery safe and sound whilst holidaying this summer.
